5 Solid Mega Drive Titles (Feat why Fortnite is over rated)

New week new things to talk about. well not so much new as this is a retro gaming blog so old things to talk about I guess.

Moving back from the opening blog on Broken Sword the time machine is going back again to an even simpler time in gaming, the late 80's and early 90's and for me this was when gaming really stating to come to the fore, we moved away from more keyboard based and we were introduced to the console, now I know consoles were around before this but the good old 8 bit Nintendo onwards is where things really started to go boom.

I was never in one camp (Nintendo or Sega) I much preferred to be able to play both and at one stage or another in my youth owned one of the other and in later life with my  'ahem' unquestionable wealth I would have both. I sadly do not have a Sega product to my name at present, my retro console collection remains somewhat sparse (Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, Playstation 1 & 2) I do however like to use my sophisticated 6 year old laptop to use emulators to give me big cup of Sega nostalgia as well as WinUAE to play Amiga titles.

I wanted to take a trip to this time and highlight some very solid titles that I played on the Sega Mega Drive (some of which may well be on other platforms) but I remember them from this console in particular.

Honourable mention's

Another world (Virgin Games 1991)
Mortal Kombat (Midway, 1992)
Speedball II (Bitmap Brothers 1991)

All three are amongst some of my favourites of there respective genres the reason's I am omitting them are purely due ot the fact I first played them on the Atari St or another platform first and they resonate with me on that platform as opposed to the Sega Mega Drive

Now 5 solid Mega Drive games

Desert Strike
Before the days of Battlefield we had Desert Strike, released in 1992 on multiple platforms, for me one of those games that felt like a bit of a evolution in gaming, the 3d model that EA used at the time just felt different, better, the game went on to spawn other titles like Jungle Strike and Urban Strike, both equally satisfying.

Streets of Rage

A Sega made beat em up from 1991, They took Double dragon and Final Fight added a big dose of performance enhancing like stuff and out popped Streets of Rage, well thats what it felt like to me. The game follows the similar type of story that both fore mentioned titles had, some sort of bad guy/gang kidnaps your girl and off you go to the right of the screen continuously button bashing your way passed the street punks who seem to get harder as you go, culminating in a boss at the end of each level. Solid title.

Beavis and Butthead: the Game (1994)

This title may not make many peoples lists of memorable games but I was a massive fan of the show and later the movie so please indulge me this once. We control the dynamic duo through the town of Highland in their quest to get to the Gwar concert, having lost the tickets to Mr Andersons lawnmower the two have to hunt down the pieces of ticket to be able to get into said concert, a simple game filled with flatulence and the likes, if you were a fan of the show you should play it at least once.

Cannon Fodder

Sensible Software and Virgin Interactive brought us Cannon Fodder in 1993 and I can bet someone on your family has owned of played this or its other equally successful title Sensible Soccer (or one of the many versions of it) both games were created of the same engine  which is pretty cool in my book considering on is a military themed shooter/strategy and one is a football title. Cannon Fodder had you navigating an obscene amount of levels (I say that because I never reached the end of the game but I have read that there were over 70 levels) so the game definitely had longevity. For me the challenge was trying to keep your original group alive (Jools et al) to try and rank them up as much as possible, once dead you would be given more recruits and the cycle would continue.

Golden Axe

Another multi platform game and again I booted this up on Mega Drive and had endless playthroughs over the years. Typical tale of run fight and hit stuff with your weapon which we all loved back then and maybe even now. 3 characters to choose from Male and Female Warrior and the vertically challenged guy, you can easily liken this to games like double dragon, streets of rage and final fight easily as it basically is the same game only more medieval, and be honest who didn't get a kick out of the in between level interactive cut scene where the little guys would come into camp and you had the pleasure of booting them up the ass to grab food and new potions.....satisfying....(im a simple man).

The Modern Corner

I had alluded to the game that's on nearly everyone's lips or thumbs at present....Fortnite, if we are not seeing popular twitch gamers such as Ninja with his good buddy drake playing this we are seeing guys like Antoine greizeman doing a Fortnite jig on the grandest football/soccer stage of the world cup final...so yeah Fortnite is everywhere.

Have I played it yes.... did I enjoy it.....sort of I guess.

So why do I think its over rated....I use this term as opposed to bad because the game itself isn't bad,, the developers have clearly invested in it and they are reaping the rewards currently. For me the battle royale scene has no depth, I feel about Fortnite the same way I feel about H1Z1 for example, pick up guns and supplies, kill a bunch of others and keep going until your the last one (in a nutshell) wait, Yup in Fortnite you can chop trees and other materials and build walls, that makes it all better. Maybe its just me but I feel the developers have just got round a table and thought we need a game that caters to the short attention span, no depth but again maybe that's the gaming purest in me who craves depth and story. Agree or disagree I respect all opinions in gaming and anyone who has good words to say then happy to hear.

I am feeling I want to dust of the N64 for the next piece. If you have stopped by thank you for  reading.

The Random game generator - Nintendo 64 version

Happy weekend gamers. I thoroughly enjoyed my delve into the archives last blog where we looked at Indiana Jones on the Amiga/Atari from the early 90's, very early in fact. Since then i have started a full play through to play it once again from start to finish. This week venture has fast forwarded us in time, not by much but still within the realms of nostalgia gaming and definitely retro. Again using the random game generator website, Nintendo 64 and adventure were punched in and a total of 8 games were up for discussion. We had a few to choose from, some perhaps a bit too easy (Goldeneye, Zelda Majora's mask, Wave race 64, 1080 snowboarding and Starfox) all on their day worthy of discussion that's for sure and to be honest Goldeneye would perhaps be a 2 part offering such is the respect i hold for it, definitely a discussion for another day. There was one game that stood out for me this time, mainly because most will know it but may have forgotten about it really, that ...

Growing a retro collection of epicness

Well shoot now we are working on multiple articles at the one time. while we are finishing up our top 10 Mario kart tracks from SNES to Wii I have been avidly scouring the world wide web via e-bay and the likes for retro-ness on any scale. Admittedly at present my retro collection is small, quaint if you will, it really only consists of the following consoles: Super Nintendo Nintendo 64 Nintendo Gamecube Playstation 2 For each console I own a substantial amount of games, most not with boxes which is a shame really. The idea for me grew organically when I started writing about retro games the idea was based on me playing some emulators and bringing back great memories of yesteryear and sharing them with fellow enthusiast's and readers but I feel I need more now and to be frank am not sure of the best way to go about it, I do have a good idea of how to go about it but would extend this invitation to anyone reading to give me advice, and also tips on how to grow my collec...

Welcome all past and present

A fine hello to you all and thank you for stopping by to read my musings about the topic of retro games and retro gaming in general. I very much enjoy writing (not so sure if I am any good at it to be honest) but there is something therapeutic about getting your thoughts down on paper so to speak, so I have thought to myself a blog would be a great start. There are many passions and interest in my life that I could choose to write about, family, travelling, fitness/work, sports, but I have chosen gaming as its something that has been there though out my life. I am fortunate enough to have witness the evolution of gaming from my days playing on the Atari 2600 as a eager youngster playing ghostbusters to current gen Playstation 4 and most consoles in between. At 36 I am and definitely feel like a veteran gamer, in another life I may have perhaps tried my hand as a You Tube content creator but also as a family man with a full time job its a commitment I could not commit too, for now I...
