Welcome all past and present

A fine hello to you all and thank you for stopping by to read my musings about the topic of retro games and retro gaming in general.

I very much enjoy writing (not so sure if I am any good at it to be honest) but there is something therapeutic about getting your thoughts down on paper so to speak, so I have thought to myself a blog would be a great start.

There are many passions and interest in my life that I could choose to write about, family, travelling, fitness/work, sports, but I have chosen gaming as its something that has been there though out my life. I am fortunate enough to have witness the evolution of gaming from my days playing on the Atari 2600 as a eager youngster playing ghostbusters to current gen Playstation 4 and most consoles in between. At 36 I am and definitely feel like a veteran gamer, in another life I may have perhaps tried my hand as a You Tube content creator but also as a family man with a full time job its a commitment I could not commit too, for now I think ill stick to getting my thoughts down here.

I am yet undecided as to how my blogging structure will work in terms of topics, best lists etc, retro game reviews, but I know one thing one of my main goals is to make people remember the games that sparked their initial interest in gaming and where it has taken them, as well as introducing games to the generations who ma not have had the opportunity to sample some of the titles that the older gamer had.

I have tried my hand on twitch which was an experience, currently inactive due to just life but the channel did top out at around 1600 followers so I must have been doing something right. I always plan to make a return to twitch as gaming and socialising are two things that fit well together, I love nothing more than gaming and meeting new people.

The plan is to make a schedule on how to review games, make some top 5 lists, recommendations etc, for anyone who happens to stop by and give the blog I read I welcome comments and suggestions on what you may think other readers may appreciate in respect of titles.

Now that we have the formalities out of the way I will move on to my first ever review on this blog. A very specific niche title released on all main platforms at the time, playstation, xbox, pc, Nintendo ds and now even on android, created by one Charles Cecil and Revolution Software in 1996 we have.......Broken Sword, a point and click adventure game that has your protagonist George Stobbart, American tourist come sleuthing detective  trawling through the Parisian underbelly trying to catch a killer and unravel the mysteries of the knights Templars. The quest sees George the unfortunately caught up in a bombing in a quaint café in paris whilst on vacation, as a result of this George takes it upon himself to track the bomber down and at the same time ends up meeting all kinds of interesting and wonderfully colourful characters (from Ms Collard to Benior to McGuire a cheeky scamp in Ireland outside MacDevits bar) "more beer over here" I do not want to give to much away with regards to characters, plots and storyline as I would hope anyone who has not played this to give it the once over, I can assure you like me you wont be disappointed.

I myself first stumbled across Broken Sword by complete accident, the game itself was gathering dust at a friends house until it was plucked from obscurity and loaded up, the game itself has some great music to accompany the game play itself, the dialogue if fairly strong also, granted the quality of the voice over appears to have been done in some sort of acoustically poor room it does not derail the enjoyment. Puzzles, interactions and many locations to be had. i am probably biased being a bit point and click fan since the days of Zack McKraken versus the alien mind benders on the Atari St in the early 90's or even Leisure Suit Larry, so its not hard for me to enjoy these types of titles.

Cecil must have done something right as the title went on to spawn several follow ups, some hit and some miss Broken sword 2 for me was equally as strong as the first, the third branched away from it's point and click origins and had a blend of point and click and manoeuvrability for the characters, story line wise still fairly strong. I am not going to give any reviews a numerical rating, more a play or not too play, Broken Sword is a strong play.

At this point i am going to give you a top 5, something i may well do with each blog. This top 5 will centre around point and click and hopefully stimulate debate and hopefully opinion.

1. The Secret of Monkey Island (Atari ST/Amiga)
2. Broken Sword 1 (PS1/PC/Android)
3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Atari ST/Amiga)
4. Zack Mckraken V the Alien Mind Benders (Atari ST/Amiga)
5. Manic Mansion. (Atari ST/Amiga)

A lot of these Atari/Amiga titles are easily found of emulators so as well as sampling BS1 I would advise booting some of these emulators up.

Finally a bit of potential controvosy to stimulate conversation....... i have never played or cared for the tomb raider franchise.....i am here to be convinced to give it a go all the same.....sell it to
me.

In the next blog we look at 5 solid mega drive titles and why Fortnite is over rated.

Straight to the Point......and click part 1

After a small hiatus from the blog we returned with our thoughts on something more modern with GTA V and its impending casino dlc, if Rockstar are to believed then i think this gamer will definitely take his Eleghy RH8 custom for a few spins around Los Santos for a few months more at least. I think the blog is going well i continue to have great ideas about what to write but struggle to find the time to commit to a schedule. The page has had nearly 6k views and the blogs don't seem to be doing to bad despite the lack of followers to the page itself. I have recently set up a Instagram page http://www.instagram.com/ragequiteretro  for the blog and a Pinterest page so i can share some of my favourite shots of games past and present, and as always i still have the page linked to my twitter  i use for my twitch, twitter.com/silverwarrior82 feel free to look me up and follow if you wish. Before i dip into the topic of the day i thought i would say a few things about myself, hopefully

5 Solid Mega Drive Titles (Feat why Fortnite is over rated)

New week new things to talk about. well not so much new as this is a retro gaming blog so old things to talk about I guess. Moving back from the opening blog on Broken Sword the time machine is going back again to an even simpler time in gaming, the late 80's and early 90's and for me this was when gaming really stating to come to the fore, we moved away from more keyboard based and we were introduced to the console, now I know consoles were around before this but the good old 8 bit Nintendo onwards is where things really started to go boom. I was never in one camp (Nintendo or Sega) I much preferred to be able to play both and at one stage or another in my youth owned one of the other and in later life with my  'ahem' unquestionable wealth I would have both. I sadly do not have a Sega product to my name at present, my retro console collection remains somewhat sparse (Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, Playstation 1 & 2) I do however like to use my

The Random game generator

For someone who had had the pleasure of gaming for more years than id care to admit, you get to playing a fair share of games across many platforms, so much so if this was a paying job i could sit and type reviews for 8 hours a day 5 days a week, but its not a paying job, its passion, its history, its nostalgia, my memories, our memories as gamers, a loading screen, intro music, that first glimpse of those 8/16 bit graphics and so on. I have recently stumbled across a very random website whereby i can type in a console/computer, even a genre of game and as many game as i want numerically and hit generate it boom up pops a list, and i thought to myself, this is good, this is great in fact, there are probably hundred of games I've completely forgotten about, i wonder if this is a way to delve into this gamers archive and see what initial memories are pulled out from it, review if from recollection as well as going back and having a go again to see how it measures up to those memories
